Firefox 3.5 with SVG Animations?
Well I just installed the newly released Firefox 3.5 on Jaunty from a PPA.
I mainly wanted to see if the speed improvements were real and if those speed improvements would affect my svg world map, with all it’s AJAX and animations.
It’s about 20% faster by eye, it manages a few more animation frames but not much more. I’m not sure if the animations are working or if fakeSmile javascript is kicking in, or even getting in the way. If anyone else has firefox 3.5 installed and would like to give it a test using the link above.
Update: Apparently Firefox 3.5 doesn’t have any animation, just faster javascript. Oh well.
At least it still works

On my amd64 karmic install with Firefox 3.5, the US SVG at http://divajutta.com/doctormo/locomap/usa/locomap-fill.svg is smooth. The world map hesitates and is not terribly smooth.

The map is a little jumpy, but Craig’s locomap runs perfectly for me.
Ubuntu Intrepid using tarball from firefox.
Now if only I could get flash (youtube) and java (webcam for corp. site) working

There is no SMIL in Firefox 3.5 – that’s coming in the next version of Firefox. If you download a nightly and go to about:config you can turn on svg.smil.enabled to see its progress (it’s got a long ways to go).

Oh damn! Oh well, at least the fakeSmile is slightly faster.
At this point I feel like I’m tapping my foot, going, “what’s taking you so long!” SVG specification was released 10 years ago.

I guess it’s just it didn’t seem worth the trouble, since everybody had flash, anyway. now with html5 coming it seems a lot mare valuable, as html + svg surely have the power to replace 99% of flash’s usecases.

Howdy,
Your animation works for me in Firefox 3.0.10 (actually swiftweasel), however doesn’t work in Opera. As far as I was aware Opera is supposed to have better support for SVG, that’s actually the reason I was testinng your animation, as I just installed Opera and wanted to check out it’s SVG capabilities.

I just found this page today, and the USA map gives a 404 for me. Also, the map in the link you posted here has a spelling error: Kansas is incorrectly spelled “Kanasas” on it.
