Ubuntu: Systems Administration Poster
This is the fifth draft of the poster/flyer I’m going to be putting about to get people interested in our sys-admin class:
Thoughts? Spelling Errors?
Note: If you have design ideas, I’d like to see them rather than hear about them, aesthetics is very subjective and explaining appealing design is difficult. So download the svg of the poster here and show me instead.
Update Draft 2: Added Organizer and updated wording as advised.
Update Draft 3: Correct Technology spelling and increased verbiage explanation of what the class is about.
Update Draft 4: Updated style and font usage as advised.
Update Draft 5: Added date time of event as major sub header and kept detailed date / time.

I have the impression, that it is too much of everything. You see a lot of words everywhere and don’t get the point what this is about and who is behind all this. Understanding from the beginning who is managing this is important, otherwise people will loose interest (people want to work with someone they trust).
my 2 cent

Looks good although “technology” is spelt wrong in the address.
2009-07-09 at 11:23
Great poster. Seems like I should have found out about the specifics of this via some other route.
Sorry I haven’t more help in getting this up and running. Things have been busy for me (I’ve been in the process of buying a house.) I’ll try and make it next Wednesday if I can.

Just saw your message out to the loco list.
2009-07-09 at 11:26
Great job … Do I have a chance to get the logo?
2009-07-09 at 11:55
sp.: technology – on the poster

I like the layout. If you are planning on printing it yourself though, the colorful background will increase your printing costs substantially. If you are having it done at a printer that doesn’t matter much, but something to consider if you are providing the ink yourself.
The “classes” in the bubble seems a little off. It emphasizes the word, which may have been the intent, but it feels a little awkward.
Having “Linux” in the “topic cloud” below seems odd. It’s far more broad than the rest of the topics down there. I’d move that into the title (ie- “Linux System Administration Classes” or similar)
Is there anything that a participant might like to bring along? Is there a previous experience / reading that might help them get more out of it?
Good work, and good luck! I hope it’s successful!

Thanks, some excellent advice.

I know that it’s not going to be well received, but the Ubuntu Logos in the background and in the middle ground (under the terminal window) would lead those somewhat versed in the *nix world to assume that it will be a ubuntu only administration. I have no problems with the Ubuntu Mass. Logo in the bottom, but the proclamation of FOSS with the ubuntu logos higher up makes me feel slightly unformtable from a *nix fan’s (BSD, Various stripes of linux, etc)
2009-07-09 at 13:03
Fortunately that won’t be a problem, it is Ubuntu based (at least Desktop wise) and Linux/BSD fans are not the target, those folks have plenty of existing channels where they can learn this stuff.

Technology, rather than Technoledgy. Unless this venue has a rather unique spelling to set it apart from the rest…
2009-07-09 at 12:48
Technology not technoledgy

I think the whole thing comes off looking too much like a cartoon. I think it would benefit greatly from a sparser look. Maybe choose one design idea and go with that; this poster combines what feels like several different designs and ends up just being too difficult to take in.
2009-07-09 at 13:59
New designs kind of need trial and error, from my eye I like this design and others have liked it too, I could spend time trying out everyone’s vague ideas about design concepts but I don’t have time. So I invite you to download the svg and give it a shot, if your design is awesome I’ll gladly use it.
2009-07-09 at 13:56
If it is Ubuntu only, I would make the colours more Ubuntu themed (ie. orange/brown)
2009-07-09 at 14:10
This is going to sound pathetic, but the icon is too noisy.
The terminal window, faded background ubuntu logo, and graduation cap are extraneous and the pseudo-3d transform is confusing. Suggest
(Ubuntu logo) and (Human Administration logo) side by side
The font should be the ubuntu title font throughout the entire document, maybe except that little info box at the bottom. Background should be something like http://ldopa.net/wp-content/uploads//AquaUbuntuOrange.jpg, except greyscale and really muted. Cut the number of icons at the bottom of the page by 50%.

I’m ready to start the classes, now just to figure out how to get there from New Mexico.
2009-07-09 at 16:15
Oh it’s an easy 14 hour car ride each way
, it’s probable that I’ll be doing some form of recording and you could always start up a class near you following the lessons and learn as you teach.
2009-07-09 at 17:07
One thing: change the font. Comic Sans sucks really, and even if this seems to be a free “implementation” of it(“Gosmic Sans”), it still sucks.
2009-07-09 at 22:36
It looks good, but it could use some rearrangement. Try looking at this guide, http://desktoppub.about.com/od/designprinciples/l/aa_pod1.htm. Don’t be afraid to do a large contrast with font sizes. People eyes will be drawn from what is biggest to smallest so you want the title to be the largest, with what will get them more interested second and the locations and times to be smallest. I am not professional so feel free to contradict me if I am wrong.

As you said in a previous comment “it’s probable that I’ll be doing some form of recording”, please do – maybe a video recording uploaded to youtube to make it easy to access all over the world.
Good work.

Draft 5 is a million times better than Draft 1
2009-07-10 at 12:51
This latest draft is a BIG improvement. Well done!
2009-07-10 at 13:04
Thanks guys, it’s nice when the comments are rewarding as well as critique. Yesterday seemed very busy.

Love your choice of fonts, I use that “Systems Admin” one myself quite a bit. An exciting poster. I wish you the best with this class, I will be dreaming of someday having a system to administer, as for now I am just one girl with one laptop!

On this side of the pond, we use dashes for phone number separators.
Spaces look awkward, took me a minute to figure out that was a phone number, your audience will also have such problems.
2009-07-11 at 22:07
Well, you may take a look here
This is just a suggestion.
2009-07-11 at 22:11
Do you have the svg available? You have some good ideas, I like the electronic font and the semi dots between the catergories. Not sure I like the colours though, since black and peach aren’t good together. But I imagine the idea is that it looks like a command line in the middle there.
Also missing branding, but then some people didn’t like my branding *shrug*
2009-07-12 at 12:23
Sent to you on gmail. You may change anything you want.
2009-07-11 at 22:27
Will one be able to follow this class remotely?
2009-07-11 at 23:26
Not really.
